From Humble Beginnings To A National Holiday, Record Store Day Has Become A Vinyl Lover's Dream

Back in 2007, Twist and Shout Records Co-Owner Paul Epstein sat in a hotel room with several other independent record store owners and dreamed up Record Store Day.

“We were like ‘yeah! Let’s have exclusive products from all the labels’ kind of like a holiday for records. That’s what got the conversation started,” Epstein says.

Who would’ve thought,12 years later it would grow to international scale, feature rare releases from heavy weight artists like Jack White and St. Vincent, and go on to be declared an official holiday in Las Vegas and a few other American cities. Record Store Day has evolved into a multifaceted event differentiated by the record stores that put them on. Many provide artist meet and greets, live performances, and various promotional pop-ups.

Epstein looks back at the early stages of Record Store Day, “In the beginning it was a slow build. It really got going around year five. Then the labels started taking it more seriously and producing more products. That’s when we started seeing the big lines before we opened.”

Paul Epstein of Twist and Shout Records.

Every year, Twist & Shout experiences record breaking attendance and this year they expect the same. Early birds will get treated to bites from indie music festival The Underground Music Showcase and coffee from Tattered Cover Bookstore. Then doors will open at 8am.

A taste of what to expect once inside: a Grateful Dead inspired ale from Dogfish Head Brewery paired with an exclusive record and poster, KBCO’s one-of-a-kind release that will only be offered at Twist & Shout, and even a Baby Shark vinyl. Full list of products available on twistandshout.com.

First timers and veterans are given the same advice from Epstein, “Come prepared. Know your priorities because once supplies are gone, they’re gone.”

Happy hunting, music lovers.

Broods Shined At Summit This Past Saturday

New Zealand brother-sister duo BROODS made their triumphant return to Denver this past weekend with a high energy set at Summit. The duo are no strangers to Denver having played here a few times in the last few years and establishing themselves a loyal fan base. Their recent trip was to promote their latest album Don’t Feed The Pop Monster. Led by Georgian and Caleb Nott the duo ripped through their set with a well orchestrated setlist that had the crowd engaged from beginning to the end. We have had a chance to see them each time they have visited and the maturity the band brings to their live performance now is unparalleled, feeling more comfortable on stage the band brings a new element to their already catchy songs. The band wraps up their US tour at the end of the month before heading down under for a slew of Australian dates to wrap up their Spring/Summer.

First Listen: Levi Double U & Reed Fox “Fish Are Small” & “Poodlez”

Denver-based producers Levi Double U & Reed Fox have come together, with the help of Reed’s seven year old niece, Isa (aka Foofy), to make possibly the coolest dance tracks about animals you will hear in 2019. The two-song EP, Animalz & Stuff, shows off the dynamic producer duo’s love for hard-hitting house music, while giving a taste of the lyrical genius of the seven year old Foofy in her debut.

‘Fish Are Small’ and ‘Poodlez’ draw inspiration from some of Levi and Reed’s favorite artists, such as Wax Motif, Joyryde, and AC Slater. With bass-heavy drops, bouncy drums, and animal-inspired lyrics, the tracks are well-suited for any dance hall or nightclub.

The Animalz & Stuff EP will be available on all major platforms on March 29th, 2019.

First Look: Babelord "Feels" Video

Just who is Babelord?

We are still trying to figure that out. All we know is we received this transmission via our 8 track fax machine and wanted to share with our fellow earthlings.

2.5 million light years away, within the 528th quadrant, beyond the ninth quasar within the Andromeda galaxy lies the planet of Galactar; home of the Galactans. The Galactans are a peaceful and highly advanced humanoid race; well versed in the arts, sciences and intergalactic love...

In Galactic year 420.69, a young Galactan by the name of Babelord was sent to the planet Earth with an impossible mission; to educate humans in the ways of infinite, unconditional, intergalactic love. With no feasible way to communicate effectively with the primitive humans, and armed only with the sounds of music and a few friends she has made along the way, Babelord and her comrades fight an uphill battle. Will she succeed, or will the spirit of humanity be erased from the universe FOREVER??????
