Brazilian Girls Danced Their Way Into Our Hearts

The Bluebird Theater was transformed into a warm and muggy dance party on Wednesday night courtesy of New York dance rockers Brazilian Girls. The four piece band made Denver one of four tour stops making for an exciting show. We were fortunate enough to catch them earlier in the day for an Open Air CPR taping and interview. With an all too familiar swag led by the talented Sabina Sciubba, the band with an almost cult like following belted out a pretty amazing set consisting of older and new favorites. The Grammy nominated band even took in the finer amenities of our fine state by partaking in some recreational smoking of our finest leafy product. The crowd never felt disengaged and even a few members got a chance to get up on stage and dance away their inhibitions while the band played their style of reggae, dance, and electro mashup of their customary element of sound.

World Premiere: Viretta - "This Garden's Over (A)"

Following years of writing and recording, Viretta’s upcoming 12-track album The Fear is now less than a month away from release. And lucky us! The record release will coincide with the band’s recently announced support slot for British arena-rockers The Struts at The Ogden Theater on May 18th! Now, with a killer new album and a killer new show lined up, Viretta is making good on their promise with the 2nd of 3 previously announced music videos from The Fear: punchy rock track, “This Garden’s Over (A)”.

If the video for last month’s barn burner “Cordyceps” gave a taste of Viretta’s dark side, the new video for “This Garden’s Over (A)” does exactly the opposite. Coming late on the record at Track 7, “Garden” finds the band in a much happier place. Though laced throughout with punchy hits and a BIG chorus, the song bounces along with a lightness that feels laid-back and fun.

Filmed last summer by guitarist Rob Moroni who, “had literally zero experience filming anything,” the video documents his and frontman Mike Moroni’s first trip to Nashville, where they meet up with fellow Denver songwriters Mason Maxwell (P O P F I L T E R) and Chase Martinez (REDLANDS). The boys visit Nashville’s Third Man Records, grill burgers, eat tacos, and dance the night away with friends. Rob was initially unsure of whether any of the footage would be usable, but with only the simplest of directions—“You guys, dance!”—the finished video is full of great, spontaneous moments. At one point Rob and Mason even convince a trio of ice cream servers to start a karate fight in the middle of their shift!

Overall, “This Garden’s Over (A)” is a love letter to long distance friends, the pleasures of barbeque, and good company. But for Viretta, it’s another exciting chapter from their new album, The Fear. Pre-Order The Fear and stream new tracks from the album below!

Our Intimate Night with The Tallest Man on Earth, Langhorne Slim & Josiah Johnson

The Bluebird Music Festival was a lovely little showcase of singer/songwriters playing at CU Boulder's beautiful Macky Auditorium, Saturday, April 21. The Festival was organized by Future Arts Foundation, a Colorado based nonprofit whose mission is to keep music and arts education alive in our schools, provide employment opportunities for local musicians & artists, & provide our community with quality music & arts events.

The Festival consisted of a special intimate dinner and show with the artists Thursday night and two shows on Saturday. The Early Show at 3pm featured The Colorado Bluebirds and The Lonesome Days and the Late Show at 8pm with The Tallest Man on Earth headlining, along with Paper Bird, Gasoline Lollipops, Josiah Johnson of The Head & the Heart, and Langhorne Slim.

The Future Arts Foundation's VIP dinner and show took place at Rembrandt Yard, a 3rd floor art gallery in the heart of downtown Boulder. Josiah Johnson (of Head & the Heart) with friends, including local rocker, Kid Reverie, serenaded the audience before headliner, Langhorne Slim took the carpet. Slim played for about as long as he talked--equal parts tenderhearted comedian and musician. The crowd was loving it--beseeching the festival coordinators to let Slim play til the very end, he got 3 more songs in there.

Saturday's Late Show started with the Gasoline Lollipops playing their rockin', honky tonk sounds. The rest of the night was more mellow and consisted of only singers with a guitar, and Josiah Johnson's set also had a lady playing the standup bass on a couple songs. The strange part was every artist, except the headliner, only got to play three songs. Each artist/band was really talented and the audience and singers would just be getting into the grove when they had to stop. Even the artists made comments, like Langhorne Slim's, "I only have about 30 minutes to play for you tonight which is going to be tough as I usually talk for 40." Just as the artists felt rushed, the whole show felt rushed until the headliner's set.

Around 10:30 The Tallest Man on Earth took the stage and we enjoyed his full hour of soulful, gravely-voiced performance. He is a solo singer/songwriter from Sweden and played a different guitar for every song, and played the keyboard on one. He did a lot of quirky movements on stage, walking around hunching, little leg spasms, quick turns of his head, and excellent guitar playing of course. There was also a raffle and a silent auction where patrons could bid on cool music-related items like signed albums and guitars. The place was packed with a wide spectrum of people young and old and even lively groups dancing in the isles now and then. We are so glad we got to be a part of these two intimate nights of sincerely talented musicians and beautiful music.

New Venue. Who Dis?

AEG Presents Rocky Mountains, one of the world's leading producers and promoters of live entertainment, announced today The Mission Ballroom, a scalable, state-of-the art concert venue scheduled to open in summer 2019. The 60,000 square-foot ballroom will anchor North Wynkoop, a new 14-acre mixed use project by Denver-developers Westfield Company, located at the north-end of the RiNo neighborhood between 40th and 43rd Streets along Brighton Blvd.

Chuck Morris, CEO of AEG Presents Rocky Mountains, said of the new venue, “Our entire AEG Presents Rocky Mountain team spent the last 11 years searching for the perfect location and the right design to build one of the finest venues this town has ever seen. With features including a moving stage that provides The Mission flexible capacity from 2200 to 3950 guests, unrivaled sight lines and state-of-the-art sound and lights, The Mission will bring Colorado the most cutting-edge concert experience in the world.”

AEG Presents Rocky Mountains, the leading promoter in Denver, CO who operate the Bluebird Theater, Gothic Theatre, Ogden Theatre, 1STBANK Center and Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, as well as book the majority of the shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, bring decades of experience to the development and design of The Mission Ballroom.  The Mission features tiered rows that provide unobscured views at every level, sight lines from every vantage point and a large dance floor that allows standing or seating. Full-service bars conveniently placed around the venue maximize flow, efficiency and patron experience.

“We blended the ballroom experience on the floor with a tiered-riser configuration similar to Red Rocks. Beyond offering incredible sight lines, this design creates the finest sonic experience that Colorado concertgoers expect and deserve,” said Don Strasburg, co-president for AEG Presents Rocky Mountains.

AEG Presents Rocky Mountains sought the perfect location for this unique venue and ultimately ended up partnering with Westfield Company on its North Wynkoop development in Denver’s transformative RiNo neighborhood and arts district.  Encompassing three city blocks from 40th to 43rd streets along Brighton Boulevard, North Wynkoop is a five-minute walk to the 38th and Blake A Line Station (one train stop to Union Station and 30 minutes to Denver International Airport) and just minutes from the intersection of Denver’s largest vehicular arteries of I-25 and I-70.

“We’re so excited with the vision that Westfield Company has for North Wynkoop. The Brighton Boulevard corridor and the entire River North area is exploding with vibrancy.  This location is a perfect fit for The Mission Ballroom with parking, easy access to light rail, and only a stone’s throw from downtown, it is the right place for us to be.” said, Brent Fedrizzi, co-president and COO of AEG Presents Rocky Mountains.

Westfield and its development team; which includes leasing agents Newmark Grubb Knight Frank and Legend Partners; architect Works Progress Architecture; general contractor M.A. Mortenson; and financing provided by FirstBank, Guaranty Bank and Trust and Citywide Banks; will transform North Wynkoop into an arts and entertainment hub attracting creatives across all industries. In addition to The Mission Ballroom, a 90,000 square foot office and retail building is under construction as well as the renovation of 80,000 square feet of 1950’s-vintage warehouse buildings transforming them into synergistic restaurants, bars and retail.  Future phases of North Wynkoop include market rate and affordable housing, a hotel, as well as the potential for an additional one million square feet of residential and commercial uses.

“We are fortunate to have the opportunity of working with AEG Presents on this innovative concept,” said Kevin McClintock, senior partner for Westfield. “The talents and experience of their team are unparalleled, and their dedication to the highest-quality musical experience aligns with our own long-term vision for North Wynkoop. The Mission Ballroom is the ideal anchor and will serve as the heartbeat for our project.”

The Mission Ballroom is not only a premiere concert facility, but also serves as a unique special event space for corporate meetings and other functions, award shows, galas, weddings, receptions, launch parties, trade shows, private events, and more.

In addition to its incredible access to rail, parking options for the site will include an underground garage as well as nearby parking options. The Mission Ballroom will also offer a shared-ride pick-up and drop-off area and an abundance of bike parking.
