COACHELLA 2015 | LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT

The desert is calling us back. Today marks the beginning of festival season to me, as the Coachella lineup was officially announced this afternoon. Every year, this day is what gives fans permission to finally start daydreaming and planning for the return of outdoor festivals, palm trees, and summertime once again...and after these past two weeks of ice, slush and snow? I couldn't be more ready. I haven't seen a lineup this eclectic from Coachella for a few years, and it's got me pretty excited.

What name did you scream out loud as you read it off the list? What names can you not believe aren't there? Share with us in the comments section below, and we can all start daydreaming together.

Tickets for the festival become available tomorrow (1/7/15) at 12pm PST/1pm MST, and as usual, they will go fast. Don't sit on this and wait, friends! Coachella is one of those things that you've got to experience at least once. Grab your flower headband, your swim trunks, and your earplugs, and brace yourselves.

The desert is calling, are you ready?

BLACK LIPS ANNOUNCE SXSW AND WEST COAST TOUR DATES

VIDEO FEATURE FROM RECENT MIDDLE EAST TOUR NOW UP ON NOISEY; ANOTHER DOCUMENTARY IN THE WORKS BY FILMMAKER BILL CODY.

Black Lips have just announced their intention to dominate the 2013 chapter of Austin's definitiveSXSW Music Festival, immediately followed by a run of dates throughout California, marking their first extensive tour in the area in well over a year (full dates below).

While the tour promises to be as frenzied and frenetic as the band's rabid US fanbase have come to expect, it will be a return to safer territory for the band, who recently wrapped up a trailblazing tour of the Middle East including shows in LebanonEgyptUnited Arab EmiratesCyprus, and more.VICE's music channel Noisey sent a camera crew with the band to document the unpredictable results of their international journey of rock diplomacy. The resulting 10 minute clip surfaced on their website today (spoiler: kids in the Mideast like fun rock music, too).

Additionally Bill Cody, documentary filmmaker and friend of the Black Lips, also travelled with the band overseas and is presently working on an independently produced feature length film. A brief trailer for that project, along with info on how Black Lips fans can help contribute, can be viewed below.

Openers Flashlights had a celebratory announcement to kick off the show; they had just signed a deal with Atlantic Records! They got the audience started on the right foot with their mix of auto-tuned electro dance. Think Cut/Copy meets Kanye's 808s and Heartbreak. You get the picture.

Next up was Adventure, from Baltimore MD. Their laid back stage presence didn't prevent us from getting into the show, though. Adventure manages to inject a wide array of urban synth loops into their otherwise poppy sound, throwing us back to memories of 80's synth bands such as New Order.

When Toro y Moi graced the stage, the sold out Larimer Lounge was heavy with anticipation. Immediately, expectations were met and exceeded as they began to play. Tracks from Underneath the Pine, Toro y Moi's newest album, made up much of the set list. Chaz Bundick and his counterparts managed a superb, precisely played hour-long set with little to no banter between songs. Toro y Moi will be continuing their tour through the midwest and on to the east coast. If you are fortunate enough to see him live you can bank on dancing non-stop straight through the set.

Toro Y Moi in Denver

Guys and gals be sure to check out Toro Y Moi as he makes his way to The Larimer Lounge this Thursday fresh off his stop at this years SXSW, seems like the guy was everywhere in Austin this year playing 8 shows.

Columbia, South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi) rose to the fore of the music blogosphere in summer 2009 when he and a few peers made their hazy bedroom recordings the most talked-about sound of the season. Critics across the board took notice of the range of his compositions, and his debut album, Causers of This, showcased his ability to make elements of Brian Wilson’s pop, 80s R&B, and Stones Throw hip hop coalesce into a distinct sound that’s as suitable for a dance floor as it is a pair of headphones.

When Chaz first signed to Carpark Records, the plan was to release two records in 2010– one electronic and one with live instrumentation–and although it didn’t quite fit into the same calendar year as his debut, Underneath the Pine is that latter offering. This release sees him following the same creative urges to completely different ends. Having spent the year listening to film composers like Ennio Morricone and François de Roubaix, Bundick returned to his home in Columbia, the birthplace of many Toro tracks of yore, to bring his new ideas to fruition. The result of these sessions is an album evocative of R. Stevie Moore’s homespun ruminations, David Axelrod’s sonic scope, Steve Reich-ian piano phrasing, and the pervasive funk of his first record. Underneath the Pine announces a new phase for an artist whose talent defies classification.
