Music | Nothing But Thieves tear up Larimer Lounge | May 17, 2016

If I had to pick a theme for my taste in music lately, it’d be “up-and-coming Brit rock acts”. Last year i fell in love with Catfish & The Bottlemen (who’s new album, The Ride, is due out next Friday 5/27), Glass Animals blew us away last fall with their show at The Ogden, and now, it’s Nothing But Thieves’ turn to burn up our Spotify playlists. This past Tuesday night we got the chance to see our favorite new UK friends in full form at the Larimer Lounge, and despite an all-too-short set and some minor technical difficulties, these young rockers feel seem like they’re out to prove something (and I think they’re succeeding).

The five piece from Essex released their first record, a self titled album in October of 2015 in the UK, and it released stateside in February of this year. Their radio single “Trip Switch” skyrocketed on charts in the fall of 2015, but for American fans, there was little else about the band available other than a few singles smattered across YouTube and Spotify. For a group that’s been steadily growing a fanbase in England since 2013, their introduction to the U.S. has been a slow moving courtship.

Tuesday’s show was certainly a good representation of the bands progress so far: the venue was filled with a mix of diehard fans and curious listeners unfamiliar with more than their name. Opening the night with “Itch”, it was immediately clear that the group wasn’t afraid to hold back. With lead singer Conor Mason putting his distinct voice to work on the chorus, and guitarist Joe Langridge-Brown using the little stage space he had, the band was ready to give the tiny venue as much of a performance as it could handle. Despite some mic issues at the end of “Itch” continuing into “Painkiller”, the fans didn’t let up on their excitement, carrying the energy of the show whilst the band worked out their technical issues.

Nothing But Thieves’ sound is familiar without being predictable. A blend of alternative rock rhythms, pop hooks, and emotional lyrics that lend themselves well to slow songs (“Graveyard Whistling”, “Lover, Please Stay”), the album is coherent without feeling mundane. Each track presents a different side of music as a whole, unrestricted by genre. Tracks like “Ban All The Music” (which ended their set) pays homage to the bands clear rock roots, but they expand on their sound with the danceable rhythms of “Hostage”, the radio-worthy hook of “Trip Switch”, and the beautiful ballad “Lover, Please Stay”. Much to my surprise, the band played “Lover, Please Stay” live on Tuesday, and Mason’s vocals were mind blowing. His ability to seamlessly slip in and out of his falsetto and make use of his strong vibrato wowed the crowd. So often it feels like we hear vocalists who can record well, but either choose or cannot produce the same effortless performances live. Mason’s vocal abilities are strong in a live setting, and live up to (if not surpass) your expectations. Another big surprise on Tuesday was the group’s choice to cover The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind”, who they mention in their Spotify track-by-track commentary as one of their major inspirations.

Although the set felt far too short (subtracting their time spent on mic issues, the show was 35-40minutes prior to a 15min encore), the band covered their bases, offering enough to satisfy listeners, but leave them hungry for more. We don’t have a date for the next time we’ll have Nothing But Thieves in Colorado, but the group is touring extensively through the summer, making appearances at the Bottlerock Festival in Napa, CA, Lollapalooza, and Reading & Leeds back in the UK in August.

Music | Denver Weekend Roundup: July 10 - 12, 2015.

It’s a busy weekend for music here in Denver, so let us be the first to tell you that it’s completely unacceptable for you to not go see at least one show! To try and help make the decision process easier, we’ve compiled a list of shows of varying shapes and sizes: from Red Rocks to radio festivals, down to the little “need to see” acts who are just about to blow up and the locals who always deserve your time and attention. Check this over, and see if you can’t squeak in a little live music to liven up your weekend festivities.

If you want some RED ROCKS: The Avett Brothers

When: Friday - Sunday night, July 10th - 12th.
Show start: 7:30pm on Friday/Saturday, 5:30pm Sunday.

I must (sadly) premise this part of our list by saying that yes, all three nights of this residency from Indie/Folk/Americana superstars The Avett Brothers is already sold out. But tickets are still available via Craigslist and StubHub! if you’re interested. This band of brothers has been selling out one weekend at Red Rocks each summer for the past few years - and with good reason. The group’s harmonies are top notch, and their music varies from heartfelt, violin-riddled lullabies to leg-slappin’, Banjo filled shoe-stompers. The Avett Brothers are some of our favorite artists, and it’s a stern Ultra5280 belief that you must see them at least once, or you’re certainly missing out.

If you want to say “I SAW THEM FIRST”: K.Flay

When: Saturday, July 12.
Doors: 8:00pm

I say this honestly, and from the heart: go.see.K. Flay.right.now. Well - at least on Saturday night. This brilliantly unique artist has been blowing up the internet for a few years now, while slowing growing her live presence.

Mixing brutally honest lyrics, entrancing beats, and a unique voice, K.Flay’s music is irresistible - perfect for jamming out, dancing, and my personal favorite - totally throwing down in the car while cruising on the highway, catching stares from all the people I pass. She was out on the entire Vans Warped Tour last year, and has toured with Denver darlings Air Dubai in the past - how many more reasons do I need to give you to make you? If you want a preview, check out “Can’t Sleep”, “Wishing It Was You”, or my favorite, “The Cops”.

If you have a thing for LOCALS ONLY: The Bluebird Disctrict Music Festival

When: July 10 - 12th.
When: All Day Err Day

In it’s inaugural year, The Bluebird District Music Festival already seems to be a promising new festival rising out of the East Colfax chunk of Denver. Featuring some of our favorite locals acts like Reno Divorce, Synthetic Elements, Dirty Few, and A. Tom Collins, this festival is a great, small scale festival truly celebrating some of Denver’s best. With show happening at The Bluebird Theatre, Goosetown Tavern, Southside Bar & Kitchen, Lost Lake Lounge and Park House, easy shows with great food and drinks are available all weekend long.

Show Alert | Red Bull SoundSelect's Brownout do "Brown Sabbath" This Tuesday at Hi-Dive

You guys should realize by now just how much Ultra5280 loves Red Bull Sound Select. A beautiful, new-age platform where fans can collaborate on playlists, discover new artists, and get access to hundreds of super cheap - and sometimes even free - concerts a year? This program sits at the forefront of new-age music discovery, and we’ve loved taking advantage of Denver being chosen as one of the first markets for SoundSelect to call home over the last year. We’ve covered multiple SoundSelect shows over the last year, and featured SoundSelect artists like CRL CRRLL, In The Whale, and The Epilogues at numerous Ultra5280 events.

SoundSelect is continuing to work hard on the artist development portion of it’s program, helping bring young artists to new fans across the globe, and they’re kicking off year two in Denver by bringing Austin-based group Brownout to the Hi-Dive this coming Tuesday, February 24th. The group describes themselves as “hardcore Latin Funk”, and I’m really not sure what could be more tantalizing than hearing each those words used together to describe one single group. Supported by Denver SoundSelect artists The Yawpers and Dragondeer, Brownout Presents “Brown Sabbath”, the group’s re-imagined versions of Black Sabbath songs. SoundSelect events like this Tuesday’s show are open to the public, but members of the SoundSelect community get first dibs on discounted tickets, as well as fun bonus’ that come with each event. Fans who join the SoundSelect community before 9pm on Tuesday and RSVP to the event online will be eligible to get tickets to the show for a measly $3 dollars (no, we’re not kidding), while tickets without RSVP will be $15. In case you needed more of a reason to come, the first 50 fans through the door of the show that night will receive a free Illegal Pete’s burrito. Good music and delicious food - what more could you ask for?

This Tuesday’s show is the first of many amazing performances Denver will see from SoundSelect artists this year, and registering with the SoundSelect community is the easiest way to guarantee you don’t miss a minute of fun. Register online at www.redbullsoundselect.com/login, and while you’re there, be sure to RSVP for this week’s show. Hope to see you there - you know we’ll be getting down.

2014's Best Venue | Lost Lake Lounge

It’s hard to pick just one venue that really stood out during 2014 because there are many. From the behemoth that is Red Rocks to the smaller venues like Larimer Lounge, we are in no short supply of amazing spots to see concerts. But, one venue in particular stood out to us as a haven for secret shows and intimate evenings. Enter: Lost Lake Lounge.

When Larimer Lounge owner and AEG talent buyer Scott Campbell was passed the torch by Matt LaBarge this year, people were skeptic that the authenticity of the dive bar would be lost. That the dank, rustic vibe would soon transform into another cookie-cutter LoDo bro hangout. But have no fear, Campbell was on the same page and only revamped the venue with a new stage and sound system. Thus, keeping the grungy, divey decor but adding in some necessary new speakers.

The remodel has attracted many artists to pop over after shows at The Bluebird for a wonderfully drunk post show performance. But better yet, the venue has prompted many artists to engage in acoustic sets on off days during tours. The lucky 75 or so people that can cram into the backroom have seen some of the best shows this year. There’s nothing that compares to seeing musicians, like Devotchka who can sell out Red Rocks Amphitheater, play an acoustic set to 75, maybe 100 people. Nothing like it. It is akin to catching a pop-up show or home show with your favorite artist. At Lost Lake Lounge, you feel like you’ve been gifted some type of insider information that less than 1% of the population knows. Because, how else would you be in a room the size of a living room listening to BROODS play?

Our top acts at Lost Lake Lounge this year were: Young & Sick, BROODS, Shakey Graves post show party, Roadkill Ghost Choir, Of Montreal, Devotchka, Deer Tick, Mickey Avalon, Mansions on the Moon and Lord Huron.

If you have yet to check out this local watering hole, we suggest grabbing their signature Lost Lake Beer (like Rolling Rock but better) and seeing a show. You never know who may show up…

Friday Night Fun | Wild High Album Release feat. Turner Jackson

It's the Friday before Christmas and we are smack in the middle of Hanukkah. Even if you don't admit it, this time of year everyone can get a little overrun by the holiday spirit - sometimes you just need a break from the spiked egg nog and ugly sweater parties. If you're looking for a good excuse to get out of your holiday office party, or just looking for a fun way to spend one of the last Fridays of 2014, look no further than Wild High's release party tonight at the Larimer Lounge.

Local indie-psych rock band, Wild high, has had a huge year. After joining the Red Bull Sound Select roster wowing crowds with sets on the main stage at Denver's UMS, packing the stage at Denver Psych Fest, and performing a CPR Open Air studio session, the band refuses to end this pivotal year without a band. In fact, they are celebrating the end of the year with the highly anticipated release of their debut 10-track album SDREAMS.

If you're familiar with Ultra5280, the name Turner Jackson might be familiar. A Local hip-hop artist, and entertainer extraordinaire, Turner helped us get "turnt up" at our Ultraversary party this past April. Tonight he will be opening the show for Wild High, and taking this opportunity to debut his brand new live backing band, an exciting change to the rapper's already charismatic live show.

Tickets are an easy $10 at the door tonight, and this is a show you do not want to miss! Doors are at 8:00pm, the show at 9:00pm, and we hope to catch a few of you getting down tonight.
