As the weather begins to get colder, and the nights begin to grow darker, we find our only refuge to be indoors. Fall/Winter tours have besieged us and there is no excuse to not attending a show on a nightly basis nowadays. We decided to pick the best shows this weekend and highlight them for you.

An evening with Glowing House and Oh Starling | Ticket Giveaway

Our good friends Glowing House are putting together a nice little intimate show with their friends Oh Starling (Dan and Jessica Craig). We love giving away tickets, so we want to send a winner and their guest to enjoy a night full of holiday music. Check our Facebook page for details.

On December 20th, we will be playing a headlining show at the Leon Art Gallery in Denver. Opening the evening will be Oh, Starling, a duo consisting of Denver veterans Dan and Jessica Craig that specializes in gorgeous, contemporary arrangements of Christmas classics. They will open the night, and we will subsequently end it. This is an all-ages show so come one, come all. Feel free to join the Facebook event. See you then.

We had a chance to sponsor Glowing House's EP release a few weeks ago. Although it was a chilly snowy night, a exuberant crowd got to see some amazing sets from Anthony Ruptak, The Raven and the Writing Desk, and headliners Glowing House.

Glowing House | The Down and Out EP | Review

Different from their previous album, Glowing House’s new EP The Down and Out, releasing in April, adds a more up-beat tempo, something to dance to. We are still impressed with the lyrics and soothing vocals of the husband-and-wife duo, Steve Varney and Jess Parsons. Polished and excited to try new things, another success story will soon come out of Denver. The previous album, Days Run Out, made me want to curl up with a cup of coffee and snuggle with my special someone and this album makes me want to drive through the mountains with my volume on high. “The Down and Out”, the first track on the EP, is a radio-friendly song that could take this band to the next level. Their mature lyrics and eloquent analogies shows the progress and dedication of this band.

There is immeasurable passion behind songs like “Motorcade” with shouting vocals and strong lyrics:

“My, my what a mess i’ve made.

Lock me up in the back of a motorcade.

When the road runs out of sight,

let me out and i’ll give it another try.”

“Nobody Follow Me” is another strong track on the album while “Much Too Much” is more airy and soothing. Steve and Jess slow things down on the track “When The World Stands You Up” focusing on the strength of their pairing vocals.

This is an impressive EP and we are so excited for this talented band. Though the indie-folk scene is “in” right now, Glowing House has been making this sweet music for years now and is a more polished version of what we are hearing on the radio. With a unique style and passion, we are certain you will fall for this album just in time for the “windows down” kind of weather in April. Be sure to catch them as they open for Night Beds on February 13th at The Hi-Dive and grab a copy of the EP The Down and Out at The Larimer Lounge on March 23rd for their album release.

Glowing House with Anthony Ruptak and Exit Ghost | Unit E | August 29

If you haven't ever been to Unit E, it is a great little venue on Santa Fe and 12th. It is a quaint, fun place to see some local music. The owners got together and decided they wanted to create a venue-gallery space that they had complete control over, hosting a full range of music genres and the art hanging on the walls is just as dynamic. On August 29th I got a chance to see three bands play, two local and one from the midwest.

The opener was Anthony Ruptak and the Midnight Friends. They are a local group with an amazing Indie/ folk sound. Anthony writes heartfelt folk melodies that make you bob your head along to the song. His powerful lyrics and vocal range paint a wonderful folk picture in your mind as you listen along. The fifth track on his album "C'est La Vie," he sings about better times/ "the grass is aways greener" and mentions the Wyatt Towing company and making a payment for having his car towed. Anthony new to the folk scene in Denver, but I expect to be seeing a lot more of him very soon.

Next up was Exit Ghost, they hail from Chicago and are on a Middle America Tour along side Glowing House. Exit Ghost is a indie pop rock band who's catchy tunes make you want to dance along. Their stage presence was fun and light hearted. The whole band seemed happy to be on tour and having a good time. Exit Ghost sounds a bit like My Morning Jacket combined with Wilco. The Indie pop sound along with lyrics such as "I don't want to move to another big city if it means I am going to move alone" make for very enjoyable songs.

The last band to go on that night was Glowing House. This folk-indie group finished up the night with their slow melodic songs about life. The husband and wife combo that make up Glowing House work wonderfully together. Their folk sound and the wonderful harmonies drift through the air like an elegant bird in flight. Steve Varney, the lead singer and guitarist, sings of new love and love lost. "This is a song about heartbreak," was the introduction to the song "Any Part of Her". Glowing House's current album, Days Run Out, is a needle in a haystack. It is hard to come by an album these days that almost every track is worth listening too. Days Run Out is the kind of CD that you take some time to listen it entirely because you just can't stop listening.
