Courtney Barnett Kicks Off Tour In Denver With A Bang!

Denver got a double dose of Australian rocker Courtney Barnett this past weekend. Supporting her latest album Tell Me How You Really Feel, Barnett filled every nook of The Ogden Theatre for back to back nights. The start of tour shows can be either hit or miss, but for Barnett she was delivering on all cylinders with her customary gritty guitar play and recognizable drawl. Opening with “Hopefulness” off the new album, Barnett and company set the done for the rest of the night with all new material and a few carry overs from her first album. The voice remains the same and her sound has evolved, after all the last time Barnett was in Denver was election night 2016, while our political landscape changed dramatically that night, there is still hope that music lovers alike can still enjoy themselves at a good ole rock and roll show.

Cashmere Cat opened for Danish singer/songwriter Mᴓ on Tuesday, February 6th at The Ogden Theater and it was surprisingly lit for being the beginning of the week. Cashmere Cat, if you’re unfamiliar, is a DJ, record producer, musician and turntablist on Interscope Records that work with a lot of big names and has a pretty signature sound and sound bits that go along with his whole getup. In front of a setup of 8x3 lights, Magnus August Hᴓiberg of Norway, got the crowd moving with favorites like remixes of Purpz & Miguel song, “Do You Like Drugs?” and “Quit (ft. Ariana Grande)” off his new album 9 which came out in April of 2017. Parts of his set were quit dancey and even on the verge of dubstep, whereas others were very dark, housey, experimental, and reminded me of deep house master Nicolas Jarr. Cashmere Cat’s set was definitely different than the ones I’ve seen previous to this, but it was really awesome, and he set the mood for Mᴓ quite well.

Mᴓ is Karen Marie Aagaard ᴓrsted Anderson is a tiny frame, cool blonde mullet, and an undeniable rock n’ roll energy on Sony Music Entertainment. She is a singer, songwriter, and electro pop producer who is kind of taking the pop world by storm. She was vibrant, grateful to be in Denver, and a true pleasure to watch perform. The light setup that was present for Cashmere Cat split for her and her band, and if you’ve ever seen the babe perform, you know she loves to move around, and so she had to have space to do so. An electro pop sound, lyrics that seem to relate to most people, and a powerful voice have the crowd swooning, then you add her energy, and you get a pretty magical experience. She played fan favorite “Nights With You” much earlier in the set than expected, but it was fucking awesome, and had the whole crowd singing along. It’s nice to a see a pop anthem live, because the energy in the room is undeniable. New song “Bb” off her new EP is a hit , and really struck a chord with the crowd it seemed. The whole set was upbeat, well thought out, and really well executed.

Overall, this show was balanced by the acts that performed, and that reflected in the crowd. Cashmere Cat drew a younger crowd, and Mᴓ a slightly older, more versatile crowd. The energy was right, the performers were on point, interactive, obviously giving it their all and enjoying themselves, and it was a happy Tuesday indeed!

Cut Copy at the Ogden Theater: October 4, 2011: Review

Ultra5280 was in the house last Tuesday night as we headed out to the Ogden Theater. Cut Copy, without a doubt, managed to throw one of the better dance parties I’ve ever been to.  The Ogden was totally packed for the Australian quartet, and they certainly didn’t disappoint.  Washed Out set a good stage, getting the crowd moving, but the excitement really rose when Cut Copy took the stage.

Opening with “Take Me Over,” Cut Copy gave everyone exactly what they wanted with their danceable tunes that gave everyone energy.  The crowd did not stop dancing for the entire show.  They played through most of their favorite tracks, including “Lights and Music” and “Hearts on Fire,” playing for well over an hour.  Nobody on stage stopped moving for the entire set, with a light show that was simply fun to watch.  The strobes and lasers complemented the music in unison as the Ogden crowd absorbed the musical ecstasy.

Even though it was a Tuesday night, Denver certainly brought it hard to the Ogden.  Everyone in the house was willing to sacrifice a few hours of sleep for the fun that Cut Copy had to offer.

Bosco Delrey: Spotlight

Mad Decent's resident dapper crooner, Bosco Delrey, is readying to take his electric show on the road this spring with Sleigh Bells in anticipation of his debut album, Everybody Wah, out April 26th!  Audiences should expect to see Bosco performing his signature combination of electro-psychedelia and rockabilly styles.  His past tours with Major Lazer, Magic Kids, and performances at the Mad Decent Block Party series, have given fans a chance to see the rocker fiercely ripping it on the guitar with vocals that hark back to the days of Sun Studios-era recordings.

After recording in Memphis with Doug Easley, Bosco is ready to bring his fusion of rock and electronic to audiences throughout the south.  The self proclaimed record-junkie will be releasing his debut album Everybody Wah  (Mad Decent) on June 14.  His song "Evil Lives" has received remix love from not one, but two of the legendary Beastie Boys - Ad-Rock and Mike D.  Gorilla Vs Bear premiered the track "20 Flight Dub" from the new album, which you can check out below as a teaser for what to expect. (press release)

You can catch Bosco Delrey this Saturday at The Ogden Theater as he is currently on tour with Neon Indian and Sleigh Bells.  Tickets are still available and can be purchased here.
