The Naked And Famous | The Fillmore | October 18

The Naked and Famous made a recent stop in The Mile High City last Friday night to a rather sparse crowd. The Fillmore was hardly half full for the talented band from New Zealand. With a newly released album dropping only last month, the loyal crowd opened up midway through their set. The duo of Thom Powers and Alesa Xanyalith powered through crowd favorites "Punching In a Dream," and "Younngblood." Newer songs such a "Hearts Like Ours", seemed to capture the dance friendly crowd earlier in the set. While I still feel like the band is slowly breaking into the US scene (as evident by the sparse crowd), the show would have been better suited in a smaller venue to create an even more intimate show for the loyal supporters.

The Naked and Famous at The Ogden: 4/18: Review

From time to time, Denver is hit with one of those “under the radar shows” that seems to slip through the cracks. The last time I saw The Naked and Famous was two years ago at South By Southwest they had just released their debut album Passive Me, Aggressive You.  With two years of touring and promoting the album, they are now a fixture on many radio stations. With catchy hooks and an infectious post-punk revival sound, it is no wonder they are selling out arenas in every city.  The group from New Zealand made up of of Thom Powers and Alisa Xayalith have a fresh way of capturing and engaging an audience during their live performance.

The sold out crowd sat through a rather unique set from openers Vacationer, who were able to play a longer set due to Now, Now canceling their performance. As the house lights dimmed and the LED backdrop lit up, The Naked and Famous opened up with an all too familiar single “All of This”. Although the crowd seemed to enjoy the performance, I feel it may have lacked energy at some points throughout the night. With most of their songs being dance numbers, the crowd seemed perplexed anticipating radio friendly hits such as “No Way” and encore song “Young Blood”.  These songs in particular showcased the skillful guitar play of Thom Powers and the angelic stage presence of Alisa Xayalith, the way she moved in her garment reminded me of wings at times.

Now, Now coming to Denver

Trans- Records and Now, Now are happy to announce dates for a month long tour this spring with The Naked And Famous. The tour will come on the heels of the release ofThreads March 6th, and an appearance at SXSW 2012. As a follow up to the song “Dead Oaks,” unveiled by the band last month as a first taste of the new album, Now, Now are giving fans another preview of what’s to come from their Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, An Horse, New Pornographer) produced record by making the song “School Friends” available for download.

“On their Facebook page, Now, Now introduces themselves as ‘tiny Midwest kids donning tight jeans and awkward posture,’” writes Nylon in describing the “infectious guitar riffs, singalong choruses,” found on Threads. “But trust us,” they go on to say, “there’s a lot more to this Minneapolis indie pop trio than that.”

This past June, Now, Now, composed of Cacie Dalager (Vocals, Guitar), Jess Abbott (Vocals, Guitar), and Brad Hale (Drums, Synth) packed up their van and drove 1800 miles across North America to record with Redekopp in Vancouver, BC. During the recording the band could tell they were hitting their stride for the first time. “We killed ourselves over Threads,” notes Dalager. “That sounds dramatic, but everything about it was excruciating in a good way. Every little idea was worked to its best.” It was earlier that spring that they’d begun to solidify a relationship with Trans- Records founder and Death Cab For Cutie guitarist/producer Chris Walla, who had become a fan of the band through their earlier releases after San Francisco’s John Vanderslice recommended he listen to the band’s debut album Cars.

With the help of Trans- Now, Now are excited for excited at the prospects of reaching new fans and new heights in 2012.
