The Red Hot Chili Peppers Returned To Denver After Their Rescheduled Appearance

California rockers The Red Hot Chili Peppers made their way back to the Mile High City for their rescheduled performance at The Pepsi Center on Monday night. The legendary rockers belted out their hits from their incredible catalog to entertain the packed house. In typical RHCP fashion the band played for the crowd with intensity and true showmanship. They also celebrated the birthday of bassist Flea (who managed to throw in a few jabs at the Denver Nuggets) who still manages to get up and down the stage with his gyrations and customary bass in your face attitude. The 11th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival took place this past weekend on the beautiful grounds of Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. With a majestic backdrop of the Austin skyline, the festival played host to well over 130 bands and 75,000+ music loving fans each day of the event. Looking at the lineup this year there seemed to be something for everybody, whether it was the blues rocking Gary Clark Jr., or the bass pounding sounds of electronic artist Bassnectar, ACL had it all. Not to mention the abundance of different food and various works of art festival attendees had to choose from.

Day 1 Friday:  We arrived on the festival grounds on Friday just in time to see the lovely duo of Tegan and Sara (will be here in Denver opening for The Killers next month). I always make an effort to get myself familiar with the festival grounds in anticipation of the running back and forth of trying to catch artist on different stages. We managed to drop by and say hi to one of our favorite DJ’s A-Trak, he had the Honda stage pretty packed for a late afternoon set playing his usual party anthems. Just across the lawn Weezer put on one of the festival’s best sets, with their all to familiar catalog of sing a long hits, the crowd belted out every word of their set. A band I continue to always be one step behind is Alabama Shakes, i made sure I arrived early enough to catch their set and was glad I did. Brittany Howard commands the stage with such respect exuding her soulful lyrics, a throwback to the glory retro-soul era of music. We also managed to grab a great spot to see one of the nights main attractions and most colorful performers the beautiful Florence Welsh and her band Florence and The Machine. Her elaborate stage setup complimented her performance to exact perfection in all aspects. Our night ended flip-flopping between Avicii and The Black Keys who closed out their respected stages in grand fashion.

Friday Highlights:

Best performance: Avicii: the electronic artist was only one of a few representing the rapid expanding genre of electronic music this weekend, but it is apparent that his headlining slot Friday night was well deserved. Already climbing the ranks of headlining status, the 23 year old Swedish DJ has had the dance floors buzzing with his blazing tracks and remixes all year long.

Wish I had waken up earlier to catch set:  First Aid Kit: last time we saw them was when they opened up for Lykke Li in Denver a few months ago. One of the more buzzed early set performances, we wont hesitate to catch them next time in Denver.

Trends spotted: Boxed water, lace tops, TOMS shoes, flags of all shapes and sizes.

Day 2 Saturday: The weather took a turn  with scattered showers hitting the festival. One of the more talked about performances would have to be the back to back sets from Colorado's own Big Gigantic and Bassnectar's set on the Honda Stage. A younger demographic packed the stage to listen to the hottest electronic acts in the business today. Combine the hard beats and loud bass with rain pouring, it was a wet and muddy dance party. On the opposite side off the festival a rather calmer crowd got to enjoy a more subdued set from Andrew Bird on The Bud Light Stage. The Shins and Roots played at the same time making for an all out sprint from one end of the park to the other.  Both veteran bands seemed to attract huge crowds on their respective stages. The rain gods seemed to show mercy for the night's heavyweight headliners of Jack White and Neil Young and Crazy Horse, both putting on epic sets to close out night two.

Saturday Highlights:​

Best performance:​ The Roots: the talented supergroup has come a long way, they manage to add a new component to their ever growing live sets year after year, anchored by Questlove on drums and Black Thought handling emcee duties their live element creates a sound infusing jazz, hip hop and soul unparalled by any other band.

 Wish I had waken up earlier to catch set: Oberhofer: takes a penchant for showmanship to a new level, it is always awesome to see musicians come into the crowd and perform (moreso during a packed festival), such was the case for Oberhofer giving the spectator a unique chance to get up close and personal with the band.

Trends spotted:​ Corporate sponsored ponchos, galoshes and boat shoes, bikinis; I even saw a guy wearing pants made out of beanie babies, Texas Longhorn t-shirts (Red River Rivalry Weekend)

Day 3 Sunday: The final day of the festival turned out to be the nicest in terms of weather. Our day started with the man who has played every festival on earth it seems, Mr. Gary Clark Jr. With his honky tonk blues, it was a perfect marriage for those die-hard Texans who have adopted the genre as the official music for the state. His talented guitar play is becoming legendary every time he plays and is garnering quite the fan base. Sunday gave us a chance to take in some of the homegrown talent based out of Denver including the talented Tennis who played to a huge crowd spilling into the main stage area. Also playing was overnight sensations, The Lumineers. Riding the wave of a hit single and underrated album, they managed to further expand their fan base with a great performance. Other notable performances included Childish Gambino, Iggy and The Stooges, and Crystal Castles. A perfect day to setup for the night's headliners and festival favorites, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, ended the three day festival on a high note. Next year the festival will expand to a two-weekend format giving fans other viable options to check out some of their favorite bands.

​Sunday Highlights:

Best performance: Gary Clark Jr., He continues to amaze with every performance and is establishing himself as a notable artist on the festival circuit; it wont be long before he is main stage material and giving hometown fans something to cheer about.​

Wish I had waken up earlier to catch set: Kimbra: played a rather early set on Sunday. With an infectious smile and great crowd presence it's no wonder she has become a favorite amongst her loyal following.

​What started out in 1983, The Red Hot Chili Peppers have given us a career spanning more than three decades worth of musical bliss. Although a bit more seasoned, they continue to exude the same energy that made them a staple of the Los Angeles punk rock scene of the early 80's. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band has sold well over 80 million records worldwide and continues to impress us with their punk influenced psychedelic funk sound. With Flea's signature funky baselines and Anthony Kiedis' emotionally charged lyrics, its no wonder they continue to sell out show after show, year after year. This was my first time seeing RHCP live and I was blown away right after the opening riffs of "Monarchy of Roses."  They reached far into their catalog of hits including fan favorites "Otherside," "Can't Stop," and "Under The Bridge". Not to be undone by a slew of newer hits from the album I'm With You including "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie", "Monarchy of Roses", and "Look Around".  A bloodied Anthony Kiedis hopped around stage during many of the songs, that damn microphone stand struck him in the temple causing him to bleed.  That didn't stop the show from going on he managed to perform the rest of the show, makes you wonder how many times that has happened before.

It goes without saying that as The Red Hot Chili Peppers continue to evolve so does their sound; a carousel of guitarist have always brought a unique element to the band dating way back to original guitarist Hilel Slovak and his psychadelic punk flair to John Frusciante and his penchant for being able to put out a song within minutes. Newcomer Josh Klinghoffer currently holds the reigns and brings a newer perspective to already classic songs and current collaborations. Although playing sitting down due to a broken foot, he still managed to leap out of his chair at times and give that unique element to the songs that we have grown to love.

The night started with a strong set from Band of Skulls. The English alternative group got things going with their unique take on blues rock that gave way to the perfect segway to the night's headliner.

Review: “I’m With You”- Red Hot Chili Peppers by Ian Beavers

My very first exposure to the Red Hot Chili Peppers did not come in the form of a beloved song.  In fact, it didn’t come in the form of the band at all.  It came to me as I sat on the floor in my grandparent’s living room in Arizona watching the Back to the Future trilogy, in which the now-legendary bassist Flea plays a goon named Needles.  Fast forward to a sunny September morning in 2011, where I emerge from my room clad only in boxers proclaiming to a bleary-eyed and overall grouchy roommate: “Happy New Chili Peppers Album Day!”

I’ve grown to love the Chili Peppers over the years, and they are without a doubt one of my go-to bands to listen to.  When “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” (the first single of the new album) was released a few weeks ago, I mused to my friends at how incredible it was that the band managed to keep the same sound everyone knows and loves while staying incredibly relevant and at times, groundbreaking.  “I’m With You” is the epitome of that very idea... You get to hear the bands background in underground funk/rap/rock fusion, their psychedelic surf-guitar solos, and their love of all music that, now more than ever, stretches across almost every genre I can think of.

With a crash, a driving beat, and grungy guitars, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are back, and they haven’t forgotten where they came from. The start is dirty and grungy, but it quickly gives way to a disco-funk baseline and Anthony Kiedis’ signature velvety vocals. It has a more driving kind of sound than other songs in recent Chili Peppers history, but in no way is it a bad thing. The song is energizing in a way that excites it’s listeners for the rest of the album, which is a great quality to have in an opening track.

Following a line of the band’s signature funk bass, another ghost of Chili Peppers past rears its head right off the bat in “Factory of Faith:” Slow, and almost poetic rock-rap.  The band was among the first in that particular musical revolution during their slow rise in the mid-80’s, and they haven’t lost their touch. And in a stark contrast Kiedis spends most of the track weaving in and out of admitting poor decisions and proclaiming faith in a more permanent love, demonstrating how far the band has come on a maturity level.  Now that I write about it it seems like an odd topic for the Pepper’s to tackle, but its pulled off in a way that can’t really be described in any other way than “Chili Pepper-y.”

When the band first began rehearsing for “I’m With You” after a nearly two-year hiatus, they lost longtime friend Brendan Mullen to a stroke.  As the story goes, they didn’t say a single word to each other when they received the news of Brendan’s death, but instead started to play their instruments in an impromptu jam session, which became the basis for the Album’s third track: “Brendan’s Death Song.” Mournful acoustic guitars start off the song, joined by equally sad bass lines and drums.  Soon their is a dark and confusing bridge that gives way to an ultimately celebratory sound that resonates with sadness, love, and hope.

“We’re rolling everybody. It starts with Bass,” can be heard as the fourth track, “Ethiopia,” begins. Flea delivers on this promise with one of the band’s most diverse bass lines that will also undoubtedly become one of their most recognizable.  The song is ultimately one that revolves around it’s beat, punctuated with Kiedis’ frequent “E-I-O-I-E-O-A” and a rhythmic tone emanating from Josh Klinghoffer’s guitar. The track is strange in that, while having a very smooth and constant sound, its also very diverse and driving. It lends itself to a road-trip playlist with ease.

“Annie Wants a Baby” has a darker sound than the tracks leading up to it had, but it has a strange resonance with Chili Pepper fans that may not be immediately recognizable.  Psychedelic guitars and intense lyrics float around a sad little story about a young woman trying to make her way in the world, with very few moments of resolution that last for a short time at the end of either chorus.  The first true return to Chili Pepper-style storytelling that the album sees, the track is underscored by an intense bass-line to give it a real feel towards being haunted by decisions that need to be made by someone who isn’t really ready to make them.

Being the first single from the album, and having a release date that preceded the album itself by about a month, “The Adventure’s of Rain Dance Maggie” is the most quintessential “Red Hot Chili Peppers” song on the album.  Led in by an undeniably toe-tapping bass-line, the song speaks once again to the bands growth. With slightly grungy images of junkies and drugs, the feel of the song is lifted and even cleansed by the far more upbeat feel of the chorus.  Its almost a relief to reach it throughout the song, with a similar musicality of a previous Chili Peppers single, “Snow (Hey-Oh).”  This song reaches a far better sound than its cousin, though, and hits the mark cleanly, something that couldn’t necessarily be said for “Snow.” How appropriate that the snow should give way to the rain! (See what I did there?)

With a snazzy drum beat the Peppers return to a more upbeat style of song in “Did I Let You Know.”  The music resonates with the feeling of travel and adventure, and in a slight departure for the band, features some pretty slick trumpet solos that end up acting as the biggest example of the band’s growth in new musical styles. Well,  new for them at least.

“Goodbye Hooray” is a rather traditional song for the group... Fans will find familiarity in the track with its high-energy beats, shredding guitars, and catchy baseline,  and with the exception of an impressive Bass solo from Flea, the song doesn’t have much else to offer... Which, to me at least, makes it the first real “let-down” of the album. On the one hand its nice to find something so familiar on the album, but after the laundry list of well-executed tracks that led up to it... it falls just a little short. Not bad, but not good either.

In another show of musical growth, “Happiness Loves Company” is the first of three tracks on the album that feature heavy use of a piano, which isn’t really something one could find as a prevalent instrument on any other Chili Peppers album. It ends up working as a very nice harmony with Kiedis’ voice, and adds some great contrast between it’s own smooth riffs and Kiedis’ choppy (in a good way!) delivery of lyrics.

Almost acting more as a poetry slam than a song, the Chili Peppers rely on all their instruments to craft a beautiful background beat for Kiedis’ prophecies and proclamations in “Even You Brutus?” The track itself is really interesting due largely to its simple overall “feel,” but as soon as listeners start dissecting all the different parts that make it all up all the layers become almost overwhelming... In a good way!

My favorite Chili Peppers songs are usually their ballads. The chill surf guitar riffs weaving around Anthony Kiedi’s voice always seem to relax and dare I say, even center me. “Meet Me At the Corner” is no exception whatsoever. The track even has a neat little breakdown during the bridge that reminds me of the Carpenters or even some of the White Stripes more chill songs.  Its a slightly sad ballad, but it revolves heavily around the idea of redemption, and listeners can even get the feeling of achieving some kind of redemption themselves, which to me is the mark of a truly great song... Something that can truly make you feel one way or another, even though you aren’t really involved at all.
