Who's Next? Battle for The Best: SXSW 2012

One of the many events I got a chance to catch during South By Southwest was the Who's Next Battle For The Best.  The event itself brought in a huge crowd with lines extending blocks just for a chance to see who would be crowned the champion of the East vs. West battle.

HOT 97 and Power 106  teamed up to present the first annual Who’s Next Battle for the Best. The bracket-style showdown brought two rising Hip Hop artists – NYC’s B. Martin and LA’s MC IMPRINT– face-to-face on neutral ground in the streets of Austin, TX. The listener-appointed lyrical ambassadors unleashed the best of the East and West as they battled it out for the Who’s Next Hip Hop Artist crown, and the right to call their coast the best.

WHAT IS WHO’S NEXT BATTLE FOR THE BEST? A collaborative Hip Hop showdown presented by NY’s HOT 97 and LA’s Power 106. Beginning on January 5, 2012, both stations invited aspiring Hip Hop artists from their respective cities to upload their original music and videos and let the listeners decide their fate over a six-week period of time. In the end, listeners from each station selected one artist to represent their coast at the final Who’s Next Battle for the Best in Austin, TX.

Who’s Next Battle for the Best launched on January 5, 2012 on HOT 97 and Power 106’s websites. Aspiring Hip Hop artists from New York and LA were invited to upload their original music and videos and let the listeners decide their fate over a six-week period of time. Over 3,700 artists uploaded profiles with songs and videos, and 250,000 listeners engaged to pick, B. Martin and MC IMPRINT, the best of each market.

In addition to B. Martin and MC IMPRINT, the exclusive concert featured performances from J. Cole and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy. Peter Rosenburg (HOT 97), Felli Fel and Yesi Ortiz (Power 106 New @ 2) hosted the event.

In the end the winner of the epic battle went to B. Martin from Albany, New York representing the East.  For his efforts B. Martin will get to perform during Hot 97's Summer Jam or Power 106's Powerhouse 2012 this Summer.
