Music | Fun Fun Fun Fest Recap and Photos | Austin, Texas

Fun Fun Fun Fest has come and gone, but this last one was a pretty special one. This year marked the tenth anniversary to the festival, and for it being my first Fun Fun Fun Fest I have to say I was pretty impressed. I heard many stories, mainly from my friends, about the festival and when I found out Future Islands would be playing thats when I knew I had to attend. The day before the fest Red Bull hosted a kick off party held at the Gibson Showroom in Austin. Free Shiner beer, Tito's, and Red Bull select artists made for a great kick off.

To my surprise Fun Fun Fun Fest knew exactly what I consider funny and the first act I saw at the festival was Eugene Mirman who many might recognize as the voice to Bob's Burgers' Gene Belcher. After a good laugh I decided to head over to the blue stage and catch Bomba Estereo that had one of the most unique sounds at the fest. Psychedelic Columbian music is probably the best way I can describe them and they had everyone dancing. I stayed pretty excited because up next I got to see Toro y Moi. The dude puts on a good show and it was the first day I got to see the Austin City skyline in the back during sunset. The performances that followed that night were a bit special. Coheed and Cambria took me on a walk down memory lane and Antemasque had my fellow El Paso, Texas natives on stage along with Travis Baker that had a big influence on me while growing up listening to all this Blink albums.

The second day of the fest started off with some comedy again from the Lucas brothers and Doug Benson. After I got my comedy fix for the day and hit up all the food stands I made my way over to the blue stage to see Neon Indian who I saw earlier this year back in El Paso for a block party. It wasn't long after that when I was able to snap one of my favorite pics from the fest that I decided to name "Wu-ception". Although not everyone was there, I along with a sea of people got down with the Wu-Tang Clan.

The third and final day of the fest was the one I anticipated the most. First of all I didn't expect to see twerk lessons provided by Big Freedia, hilarious to say the least. After all the twerking both on and off the stage Chromeo put on one hell of a show with one hell of a shiny guitar. But the moment I looked forward to the most was to finally see Future Islands on stage. Pure happiness is really the only way I can describe my experience and a shout out a couple days later from the band for the picture I took only made it better. Finally to wrap up the first ten years of Fun Fun Fun Fest was the one and only Ms Lauryn Hill. Her rap game was still on point but it was unfortunate that they would eventually cut off her mic, and just like that the fest was over.
