First Listen: Whiskey Autumn - "In Between Halloween" and "Zombie Dance"

Just in time for spooky season one of Denver’s up and coming bands Whiskey Autumn gives us a treat that will satisfy more than candy corn. Not one but two new singles to celebrate Halloween season. The two tracks are more dance friendly than usual making you want to let loose while you celebrate your eighth bobbing for apple championship. Cheers!

“In Between Halloween” and “Zombie Dance” are the latest singles from Denver indie pop band Whiskey Autumn following the April 2019 record Modern Doubt and its accompanying July 2019 remix album Moderned Out. After a West Coast tour with OptycNerd and Levi Double U in July and a buzzworthy set at UMS 2019, Whiskey Autumn spent the remainder of the summer crafting these two spooky, Halloween inspired singles.

Written by frontman Greg Laut and co-produced by Laut with bandmate Jason Paton, the A-side, “In Between Halloween,” is a moody slice of dark synth pop while the B-side, “Zombie Dance,” is a slow building electronic rock song which eventually erupts into a rousing, anthemic chorus. Taken together, these two disparate yet cohesive tracks showcase Whiskey Autumn’s interest in blurring genre lines and refusing to drive within one sonic lane. Laut and Paton performed and recorded a majority of the instruments on the tracks while the rhythm section was bolstered by Forrest Raup (Eldren, Pink Fuzz) on drums and Steve Giles on bass.

Thematically, “In Between Halloween” plays with the concept of identity. Says Laut, “Halloween has always been a fascinating holiday to me as individuals are encouraged to explore different facets of their personalities and express them safely to the world without fear of judgement. I wanted to write into this concept and play with the idea that it is easier to choose who you are on Halloween versus the remaining 364 days of the year. Whiskey Autumn has never produced a holiday song before, so we were mindful to veer away from campy holiday vibes and present a sincere song that will still make your trunk rattle.”

Whiskey Autumn for the past couple of years has been flying under the radar in the Denver music scene and are finally garnering some much needed respect. On this track the band captures a much more dance friendly vibe playing to the strengths of Laut’s unique voice all while delivering production that will have us clapping in unison at their next performance which is on April 12th at Lost Lake.

Monochrome Actress” is the third single from Whiskey Autumn’s upcoming album, Modern Doubt. The first, “Birds That Flew,” premiered with 303 Magazine, followed by the premiere of “Let’s Go Sailing Instead” on CPR’s OpenAir. After a buzzworthy set at UMS 2018 and extensive touring throughout the Pacific Northwest and Midwest, Whiskey Autumn was named one of “13 Local Musicians to Watch Out For In 2019” by 303 Magazine.

Produced by band members Greg Laut and Jason Paton, “Monochrome Actress” is a dreamy electro pop tune which builds off the foundation of Whiskey Autumn’s previous EP, Ice Cream In The Sun. The song was mixed by Chris Scott (OptycNerd, Young The Giant) and mastered by Jim Wilson (David Byrne, Neko Case, The Yawpers). The track was written by frontman Greg Laut and features an old Hollywood film noir sample, dancey synth lines, jangly surf guitar, and falsetto vocals. The track juxtaposes classic Hollywood’s outward appearance of glitz and glamour with the grim realities of attempting to succeed within the entertainment industry.

Says Laut, “‘Monochrome Actress’ was written after watching a slew of classic films from the ‘40s and ‘50s. Movies have always been a great source of inspiration for me and it was fun to tap into an old Hollywood vibe for this song while meditating on the dark realities of showbiz.”
