Ultra5280's Best Albums of 2014

With so many great albums that came out this year it is always a task at hand trying to chose our favorites. This year was no different, we are fortunate to get to see as many shows as we do, as well as open our inboxes to early releases and exclusives. The great thing about our staff is that we each have our own unique bands that we love, thus making our lists an eclectic mix of great music. There were a few newcomers to the list as well as some established bands making great albums this year. A couple late additions from J. Cole and D'angelo that barely missed the cut stood out as well. Without further adieu, Ultra5280 presents the Best Albums of 2014. These are in no particular order. What were your favorites this year?

Interpol | The Ogden Theatre | September 27

One of our favorite bands Interpol made a stop at The Ogden on Saturday night. The sell out crowd expecting a greatest hits set may have been left a little dissappointed. The band is currently touring in support of their new album El Pintor (a playful take on the bands name) so it only made since they graced us with a lot of new material, which we were loving. Interpol is band whose sound has always been compared to The Jesus and Mary Chain, and has been around since early 2001. It was during that time that the post punk revival started to gain attention, with the likes of The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Vines (what happened to them), and more. Interpol held their own and continued to make pleasurable listening records ever since.

The band has received much scrutiny since the departure of former bassist Carlos D. Even those considering themselves hardcore fans jumped ship once he left, the core group of guitarist Daniel Kessler, drummer Sam Fogarino and lead singer Paul Banks have continued to make great music. El Pintor takes us back to the original sound Interpol once conceived with Turn On Your Bright Lights. The dark undertones and masterful guitar play ranging with classical reverb and organic garage tones set the mood with Bank's uncanny voice.

The band opened up with "My Blue Supreme" giving us a glimpse of new material, they managed to perform six songs off the album mixed in with a couple classics culminating with the song that jump stated their career as an encore and everybody sang along to "PDA" to close out a great evening of new material sounding reminiscent of the old sound we have grown accustomed to love.

Paul Banks | Young Again | Video and News

By no coincidence am I wearing my Interpol "Turn On Your Bright Lights" t-shirt I purchased in 2003 today. The album is celebrating its ten year anniversary this year. It is also marks the release of frontman Paul Banks's second album as a solo artist. He will be making a stop in Denver on November 27th. Check out the video for the first single off Banks titled "Young Again".

Paul and his band will also perform on David Letterman on Monday, October 29. Be sure to tune in!

Paul Banks | Banks | Coming October 22

Interpol frontman Paul Banks is about to release his second solo album titled Banks. For those of you unfamiliar with Paul Banks, he released his first album titled Julian Plenti Lives and got rave reviews. This go around he drops the moniker of Julian Plenti and simply titled the forthcoming album by simply adding his last name. Below you can stream the first single "The Base" off the album due in stores October 23rd.
