First Look: Yugs-”Dancing In My Room” Video Premiere
Yugs has just released the animated music video forDancing In My Room, the final chapter in the rollout for his third LP of the same name—a genre-blending emotional odyssey years in the making.
Created alongside animator Mason Cullen, editor Juanda Báez and Ecuadorian producers Fernando Torres, and Jonathan Venegas over the course of 2 years, the five-minute animated short serves as a psychedelic metaphor for the aftermath of a life-changing breakup. What begins as a story of loss and destruction gradually transforms into one of healing, community, and self-acceptance.
At its core, Dancing In My Room is about learning how to stop running from pain and embrace it. Inspired by Daft Punk's Intastella 5555, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Cowboy Bebop, the short animated film uses N64 style animation to follow the story of John the Duck (Yugs alter-ego) as he navigates a house party after a life-altering breakup. At its heart, the story is a love letter to the Denver music community that helped Yugs through one of the most difficult periods of his life, transforming a deeply personal experience into a universal story about learning to dance through life's darkest moments.
The video marks the conclusion of a release cycle that began with singles like Mona and documents a transformative period in Yugs' life, spanning heartbreak, personal growth, and his move from Denver to Los Angeles. Blending surreal animation, introspective storytelling, and vibrant psychedelic imagery, Dancing In My Room serves as both a farewell to one chapter and a celebration of the people who helped write the next one.
