We always love when new music lands on our lap. The song is an upbeat anthem that will have us dancing around while forgetting the craziness of our world right now.
“Leaving Town” is The Mazlows’ timely take on the classic pop-punk trope of feeling disenchanted with the town you hail from. “All of us grew up in Lakewood, Colorado — a typical American suburb that we’ve always dreamed of leaving,” Colton Kooker (guitar, vocals) said. Though many of us can relate to wanting to burst out of the hometown we were raised in, some of us are just getting a taste of that feeling right now after months of isolation at home. “The song connects our young dreams of moving away, to the current realities of still having challenges in life,” Kooker explained.
This single isn’t just just about getting out, it’s also about what people choose to leave behind. “I was always fascinated with people who were constantly on the move from state to state — and wondered what kind of lives they were leaving behind,” said Nate Hout (guitar, vocals). By combining that feeling with the temptation to get out, this single reignites our youthful longings with a punk-pop backbone that some of us may not have known we missed. Backed with vocals that make you want to sing along and an ethos that screams “weekend getaway,” “Leaving Town” is the perfect anthem for your (likely) angsty summer.
The song isn’t just a single packed to the brim with anthemic hooks and energetic beats, it’s also a celebration of the band’s growth. “The guitar riff was actually written when we were 15,” Kooker said, “but the chorus was written this year as we turned 30.” This progression is just a taste of what’s to come with The Mazlows’ debut full-length album Community Locker set to be released this August.
