Music | New Music Thursday (We slept in Tuesday) featuring P-Keez

From time to time we like to highlight Denver artist who are true to the hustle. In this case we have known this cat for a hot minute and he has been stirring up some hotness. We had a chance to sit down with Kendall Clinton who goes by the name of P. Keez. One of the Mile High City's rising hip hop acts check out what P.Keez had to share with us and listen to his single "Fifty Two Eighty" produced by DJ Nest (we have adopted it as our own theme)

What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is P.Keez (spoken P-dot-Keez) and I’m from the 757. Virginia Beach, VA to be specific.

Where did the name P.Keez come from?

The name P.Keez was a bit of an evolution. I was still in high school when i got the nickname “PK.” The Keez part is metaphorical. Ive always had a knack for accomplishing the unimaginable and speaking things into existence. I truly believe I hold the keys to the world I want or, that I AM the key. It continues to be proven as I surpass each hurdle and open each door… hence my debut album title: Keez Open Doors Where “PK” came from… Well, that will have to be for my tell all!

Who are your influences?

The 7 Cities, Hampton Roads, area is full of talent.. So many names from the likes of Timbaland, The Clipse and of course, Pharrell. So, I’m influenced by my area and those that have come before me. I also have a background in business - so I’m always trying to think like a Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, and Diddy. The creation of music and the discipline of building wealth is what I’m about. One door at a time...

Describe the hip hop scene in Colorado and in Virginia?

The Hip-Hop scene in Virginia is too “controlled,” if you will. Its been a few years since I’ve tried to push back home but there wasn’t a lot of opportunity to showcase my work. There were also a lot of people charging money to place artists and I wasn’t into that. So for years, I’ve been traveling to Denver doing pretty big shows at all the popular venues downtown. The Denver scene is definitely more supportive. People are always trying to collaborate and come together to put on shows. Big or small, theres opportunities to get on stage rather there is a big-name, headliner involved or not. I also want to show appreciation to the venues. Ive had so many direct conversations with owners and bookers about putting on an event without a promoter doing the in-between. Denver has always shown me a lot of love, so as I’ve been traveling, I’ve chose to call this my second home.

You have a show coming up at The Gothic, what can we expect and where can people go to find out more information on it?

Im really excited about The Gothic. Expect energy… The whole Travel Team (TTO) will be blessing the stage of the first time this year. You’ll hear a bunch of group cuts  - a little bit of what everyone has to offer. But we make hits, great hooks, dope flows and BARS! I’ll see y’all on stage.. Stay updated at Facebook.com/pdotkeez for everything from events to new music releases, but heres a direct link to the event.
