Where did the idea for Titwrench come about?

Bree: A group of us who had been friends through the local DIY music and art community came together in 2008 to talk about what feminism meant to us. That group became the original Titwrench crew, who orchestrated the entire first fest from the ground up. There are dozens of music festivals happening around the country each year-- but we aim to showcase female and female-identified artists who push the boundaries of genre and form. We work with folk, punk, experimental, noise artists, and every genre between. 

Our mission was then and still is today to create an all ages, inclusive music, art and performance gathering that connects often marginalized artists with a welcoming community. We are completely DIY, from the volunteers who make the festival badges to the sound people to those that stage manage and run the fest. From volunteers to performers to fest organizers, we're all on the same level. 

You guys are in your fifth year now what has made this festival so successful and where do you want to take it?

Bree: Our community that has been created around Titwrench is what makes us successful. Everyone donates their time and gives their energy to make Titwrench happen. Check out any night of the fest to see what I mean-- it's like no other show you've been to. 

Most local festivals seem to approach a grassroots style nowadays, what are some of the challenges that you face when putting together something like this festival.

Bree: We were born grassroots and that's what we know how to do. In order to keep from conforming to the normal festival bullshit, we are truly DIY, or DIT (Do It Together) from all sides. Time, equipment and venue space is donated. It's pretty amazing what people can do when they share a desire to create art that is accessible to everybody.

How are the artist for this festival chosen?

Bree: We take submissions from interested artists as well as seek out local and national artists we hope to bring into the fold. The line-up is often the hardest part, because we have to pick from a pool of really great, versatile artists. 

Finally what can we expect from this years Titwrench and where can we find out more information?

Bree: If you've never been to Titwrench, no better time than our fifth year. We have noise artists, MCs, dancers, DJs and poets all performing in an all ages/all welcome space. Milch de la Maquina is an artist collective based out of Albuquerque that creates a unique performance just for Titwrench each year. Suzi Q. Smith is an internationally renowned slam poet, MC, and activist based out of Denver who will also be performing this year. We've got Denver art punks Dangerous Nonsense, NYC's minimalist noise artist Olivia Neutron-John, and local modern dance innovator Tara Rynders, among many amazing performers.

Over the span of three days we will see many musical acts, but also host educational worshops, byo-shirt screen-printing, yoga and a whole lot of connection between strangers.

Titwrench goes down September 5,6,7 at Glob, 3551 Brighton Boulevard in Denver with performances starting at 7pm (day time workshops and yoga info can be found on our Facebook and tumblr.)
