Wampire opened up for The Smith Westerns last night at The Bluebird Theater. The show was a total 80’s throwback. I was so Sixteen Candles about it.

Wampire got their name from a German foreign exchange student acquaintance of theirs who kept mixing up his “v” and “w” sounds. There is a lot of history behind the word “wampire.” However, it’s strange and scary, yet comical – the very essence that the band portrays. The guys were donning funky clothes and portrayed the chill essence of a psychedelic rock band. When they played “Magic Light,” I definitely fell in love for at least a split second. These guys sound incredible live. I’d never seen or heard of them before until last night. They were amazing.

 They have a sound that makes you feel so young. When you watch the flashing lights changing color and hear the dream-like sounds and muffled voices harmonizing, you are launched into oblivion. Everything blurs together into this beautiful aura. It’s not your typical indie rock show.

Their music is haunting, and frankly, creepy. Not in a way that sends you running for the hills, but in a way that makes you unable to turn yours ears away and gives you the chills. While they are creepy, even in the way that they wear their sunglasses during their shows – they are still light-hearted, funny guys. The power kept going out on the bassist – but the guys kept the jokes coming and the crowd was entertained.

You should expect the oddity considering that they are from Portland. They are the hippest of hip. However, you can tell these dudes aren’t just trying to be cool. They have a way about them that is repulsively attractive. Their music is magnetic. Wampire released their new album “Curiosity (2013)” this year and you just have to hear it. Add something interesting to your collection.
