Red Bull Music Presents: United States of Bass. On December 13th, 2018, Red Bull Music Presents a celebration of bass sounds from across the country at Cervantes’ Masterpiece in Denver, CO. Taking over both rooms of the iconic venue (The Ballroom and The Other Side), Red Bull Music is bringing together the pioneers and trailblazers of America’s most influential regional bass music styles from the East Coast, West Coast and Midwest for an unforgettable night in Denver.

The lineup features DJ Craze (Miami), Daddy Kev (Los Angeles), UNIIQU3 (New Jersey), Jubilee (Miami), Dieselboy (New York), Arabian Prince (Los Angeles), DJ Deeon (Chicago), and DJ Taye (Chicago). Additionally, Red Bull Music has curated set takeovers from four of Denver’s most exciting crews, VIBeRATION, Souls in Action, Sub.mission, and Recon DNB, each representing their own distinct genre within bass. From footwork and juke, to dubstep and drum and bass, these crews uniquely celebrate, highlight, and extend the rich culture of Denver’s booming bass scene which has thrived for over a decade, filling club rooms with sounds of the best bass music innovators in the country.

Nicole Cacciavillano, founder of Sub.Mission, explains, “Denver is the bass capital of America…The amazing thing about this city, is that in each genre of bass, we have incredible teams running things properly and doing it for the music. It is inspiring being a part of a city that is always pushing things forward.” Valerie Molano, of VIBeRATION, doubles down on this sentiment, stating, “Denver is a huge hub for electronic music because of the support in the community for talent and good music. There’s a lot of love and educated bass heads in this city and it’s attracting people from all over the nation and the world.”

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, and available for purchase here.

No Plans Wednesday Night? Lapalux at Cervantes!

Lapalux_leadshot_Ozge_Cone_preview.jpeg

Lapalux released his third album, Ruinism, on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint on June 30th, 2017. His previous LP, Lustmore (2015) was partially inspired by the concept of hypnagogia, a suspension of consciousness occurring between wakefulness and sleep. Throughout Ruinism the British producer takes this exploration further, journeying onward to the more ominous limbo space between life and death. In this liminal space where the finite and infinite intermingle, Lapalux (aka Stuart Howard) sounds more at home than ever.

'Ruinism’ is a made-up term I use to describe the way in which blended sound palettes and inspirations interact with one another to form this album,” Howard, explains. “I would record synths and drum hits and re-sample, re-pitch, twist and blend the sound until it was ‘ruined’ and then salvage it again in an attempt to make something coherent.

Much of Ruinism’s inspiration was born out of a theatrical score Lapalux wrote for the performance art piece “Depart” which was performed in an East London cemetery. The aptly named project served as genesis for a direction wrought with doom and melancholia. Ruinism is all sonic wreckage and rubble created using only hardware and real instruments. The sound simultaneously destroys and redeems itself across a tight and formidable forty-eight minutes.

Amidst the brutal landscape that Lapalux (de)constructs, he makes room for softness and slivers of beauty that, as with most things subtle and delicate, inevitably cut through even the harshest of environments and juxtapose the rigid exterior that characterizes most of the record. For example, “Rotted Arp (feat. Louisahhh)”, the first single to be lifted from the album, begins with a spoken word poem written and performed by Louisahhh over a decaying arpeggiated riff that churns and builds until it splits apart just as easily as it begins. The ethereal “Falling Down (feat. JFDR)” communicates a near angelic sense of hope and possibility despite the inaudible nature of granulated vocals performed by Icelandic singer Jófríður Ákadóttir (JFDR) of the bands Gangly, Pascal Pinon and Samaris. Similarly, “4EVA (feat. Talvi)”, winds through a cloudy haze reminiscent of the space between life and death and remains there like a slowly dying pendulum. There’s a warm elevation across the female-driven tracks that, as it unfolds, stand in stark contrast to the industrial and often discordant beginning of the record, most noticeable on cuts like the menacing “Data Demon (feat. GABI)” and chilling opener “Reverence”, which was inspired by French Dada artist Frances Picabia’s 1915 painting of the same name.

This pattern of disintegration and recovery is one that reaches far beyond Ruinism; our current world feels unknown, in-flux, and consistently worn away yet we continue to salvage what’s left of it - we find possibility amongst the wreckage and seek relics of hope and coherence in the chaos and somehow manage to emerge on the other side. On Ruinism, through all of its bleak primitivism and reclaimed beauty, Lapalux does just that.

Oak Creek Band Ticket Giveaway

We have a pair of tickets to giveaway for this upcoming show featuring Oak Creek Band at Cervantes this upcoming Saturday March 3rd.  All you have to do is respond with a comment and we will draw a pair of names on Friday.

The Oak Creek Band is a six piece roots rock group, originally from Sedona, Arizona now based out of Denver, Colorado, known for their soaring harmonies, original melodic arrangements, and high-energy live performances.  Described as an eclectic mix of soul and folk influenced indie-rock, the band travels the country independently singing timeless, original songs in the do-it-yourself spirit if the new music industry.

Founding members Daniel and Jenna Watters are both featured on guitar and vocals, with Paul Morris on Wurlitzer piano and guitar, Steve Rogers joins on bass with Ryan Ebarb on keys and Carl Sorensen on drums.  Their musical goal: “Spreading our music and message of the importance of coming together as a people in the name of love and peace.  Oh, and making a living off our music so we can quit our day jobs," says Jenna Watters.  Oak Creek has been performing extensively around the southwest for thousands of people in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Colorado since 2010.  The versatility they have gained through playing in a variety of venues for a wide demographic is immediately evident but their musical style, however, is not.  “The Oak Creek Band has a hold of their identity, even if that identity isnʼt something that can be easily categorized,” says Peter Washington of Concerted Effort Blog. Courtney Boutwell of GtoC Magazine also conceded, “I was searching and searching; but … I could not identify another band with a similar sound.

Having just sold out of the first pressing of their self-titled EP in less than a year, the new six song EP, “Fingerprints,” will feature songs from the bandʼs popular live repertoire including the new single “2012.”  Production is currently underway in Morrison, Colorado with Josh Fairman at Scan-Hope Sound Ranch.  It will demonstrate the same classic song-writing style as their original EP, but hopes to convey the raw energy The Oak Creek Band emits in a live setting.  Look for “Fingerprints” to be released this spring!

The Oak Creek band is:

Jenna Watters: Vocals, Guitar

Daniel Watters: Vocals, Guitar

Paul Morris: Wurlitzer Piano, Guitar

Steve Rogers: Bass

Ryan Ebarb: Keyboards

Carl Sorensen: Drums
