Ray LaMontagne | The Belle Brigade | Review

WORDS: ALEXIS VERACRUZ

Red Rocks always brings eclectic groups of people to their shows, but the Thursday night concert had quite an extensive variety. These folky upbeat performers brought in grandparents, hipsters, and music lovers and he still soothed the souls of everyone all the same. The opening act perfectly set the stage for the evening. The brother and sister duo Ethan and Barbara Gruska, also known as The Belle Brigade, managed to turn the massive venue into an intimate concert hall. I found myself in a daze watching the two harmonize and play off of each other's energy. The passion behind the songs Rusted Wheel and Losers was so intense I almost cried, the verge of tears could have been attributed to the fact that I was quite inebriated, but the intensity of the performance was amazing regardless.

The rain and The Belle Brigade got the entire crowd pretty sopping wet and everyone stayed wet for Ray LaMontagne. Although Ray skews more towards being a serious performer he fed off of the crowd and belted out "Love me or hate me, I ain't going anywhere."  Damn right he isn't, the crowd loved the classics and sang along to every word of Jolene, but the vibes rhythmically continued through the performance of the Supernova album. The Belle Brigade accompanied by Ray LaMontagne through the majority of his set, and the performers blended well together. The night ended with two encores and one harmonious and satisfied crowd. This show was sublime and we hope to see these performers back again!
