The last day of festivals are usually grueling by this point. By now you have managed to know the inner logistics of the festival, shortest beer lines and times, when to grab a bite without missing a beat and so on. Sunday was a day that brought hip hop fans, indie fans and electronic fans all together for one last day of music at Sports Authority. Sunday was a day to discover bands and DJ's I had never heard. I'm glad I did, one of the festivals best sets came courtesy of What So Not, who had a packed stage from front to back dancing and singing. I was truly impressed with his showmanship and the way he fed off the crowd. Another crowd favorite was the duo of TWRK who also managed to get a party started, somewhat challenging for an early opening slot. The early main stage set was taken by one of Denver's hardest working bands You Me and Apollo. These locals have just finished wrapping up an album and we should see it here shortly. With a stage presence worthy of the larger stage they managed to capture a few of the festival stragglers that were just walking around. A great set by a great local band. Another local band that has been on our radar recently is Inner Oceans. We had a chance to see them during Denver's first Red Bull Select show a few months ago and were left pretty impressed. This band is currently receiving some buzz and we highly recommend seeing them before they blow up. Their mid day set was well received considering the abundance of other bands playing the other stages. A good festival is not a good one unless you through on some hip hop legends. Thus was the case as the legendary Chali2na of hip hop pioneers Jurassic 5 took the stage. Flanked by his traveling band Chali gave us all a taste of one of the most recognizable voices in hip hop. The steam continued to roll throughout the day as we wandered from stage to stage. One of the days surprises (and festival) was from the performance of local hip hop emcee Turner Jackson who filled in for Afroman. Aside from playing one of the official late night shows, it was Turner's time to shine on one of the main stages, and that he did. He brought out his usually energy to his set, encouraging crowd participation and bringing out female emcee Lady Fangz who also happened to kill it (still wondering when that term is going to die). Possibly one of our favorite sets of the day without a doubt, continue to look for Turner Jackson tear up the Mile High City in the future. Another surprise performance was that of Australian dance-electro artist RÜFÜS DU SOL, we actually had a chance to interview the band before their performance, the trio from down under came out swinging with the same dance friendly anthems we have come to love from fellow countrymen Cut Copy (who they will be joining on their UK tour). truly one of the big surprises of the day and most enjoyable sets. Staying on our hip hop vibe when the Snowball lineup was first announced, one of the artist that made us do a double take was none other than Flipmode Squad founding father and legendary emcee Busta Rhymes. Now I have been a huge Busta fan since the jump off, i'm talking the "rawr rawr like a dungeon dragon" days. Busta's unique trademarked dreadlocks and uncanny voice have made him the godfather of collaborations and has quite the resume to back it up. He took the stage with longtime hype man Spliff Star and showed Denver what old school hip hop was all about. He went on to tell the story of how he was about to light up on stage "legally" for the first time as a musician.....and he did. He continued to provide the crowd with ass shaking anthems and sharp lyrics that we have all become accustomed to. As he began to wrap up his set one of the biggest Pretty Lights Label parties was about to take place, and boy did it take off. Front and center was previous night headliner Pretty Lights flanked by his label mates Michal Menert, Paul Basic, Supervision, Eliot Lipp and Break Science. They managed to play an on the fly synchronized set that I had never seen before. Each member taking their turn to showcase their talents, each artist would feed of one another and mix in with their own music making for almost two full hours of dance mayhem. Accompanied with their trademark laser light sets it could have easily packed the main stage. The nights final headliner also managed to captivate the crowd with a smooth transition, Griz continued to keep the party going with his unique brand of electronic accompanied with a live guitar player and set of horn players. It was apparent that the Pretty Lights Family Party may have drained the crowd a bit. The Ballroom Stage finished up their night with a powerful set by Jagwar Ma. They had a smaller crowd as was expected by the draw Griz had. Not to be undone, they managed to captivate the loyal fans, who probably will never see them in such an intimate atmosphere.
