We were lucky to sit down with Joel Van Horne, creator of Covenhoven recently prior to his upcoming show this weekend. Van Horne’s music transports you back to a log cabin in the middle of Colorado where nothing else mattered but chopping down wood to feed the fire. If you ever have the urge to sit in the pouring rain and contemplate life, then Joel’s your guy. He captures the heart of Colorado through cry-alone-in-the-shower lyrics and guitar solos. As a Colorado native, he grew up wandering through our streams and mountains, jotting down music with a reed brush he scavenged from the forest. Symphonic folk, cinematic mountain music...

What does your perfect day in Colorado look like?

It would definitely involve something outdoors... and wouldn't necessarily hinge on any particular season... a whole day on the Colorado river with some friends, splitting time between lounging in the hot springs and swimming in the river, then camping that night... this would be pretty high on my list.

Covenhoven is not a typical band name, can you elaborate on how you cam up with this name?

Covenhoven is the name that my dad gave to the log cabin my granddad built by hand over the course of a decade half a century ago in southern Wyoming.  This music is inspired by the memories, landscapes, and spirit of Covenhoven.
