A bustling Friday night found us at The Fillmore for MGMT. The duo of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser exploded on the scene with the release of Oracular Spectacular in 2007. Since then they have released the follow-up Congratulations which was received with some lackluster reviews. The band is currently touring to promote their self-titled new album set to release on September 17.
The band managed to pack The Fillmore with what can only be described as hipsters, hippies, ravers, and well that seemed to be ok with the band who gave those in attendance their moneys worth. Some may say that the band has only a loyal fan base, but as any lover of music the crowd in Denver seemed to be more open to their unique style that has earned the band critical acclaim. With a no holds barred attitude VanWyngarden and Goldwasser make music that appeal to not only themselves but to those willing to settle for something different.
They opened the nights festivities with the slower "Congratulations," which VanWyngarden sang flawlessly. Other notables where "Weekend Wars," "Electric Feel," and "Time To Pretend," which have always been staple hits of theirs. They did give us a glimpse of their new album with "Alien Days," "Your Life Is A Lie," and "Plenty of Girls In The Sea". Definitely a bit different from what we are used to hearing from MGMT, but as always they have opened up the scope to their own creativity that has made the band successful.
