DIIV and Wild Nothing | Larimer Lounge | September 12

One of my early favorites for top five albums would have to be Oshin by New Yorkers DIIV. Once I got word they were going to be in Denver I was curious as to how their studio sound would translate live. Categorized under the chillwave/shoegaze genre their sound reminds me of early recordings of The Cure. The foursome from Brooklyn look like they could still be running the halls of your local high school, yet their sounds maturity is evident on standout tracks such as “Geist” and “Past Lives”. The early set had the Larimer Lounge pretty packed and could not help but notice people witness the coming of a new breed on indie rock.

Next up was headliners Wild Nothing, led by frontman Jack Tatum. The theme of the night seemed to be consistent with Tatum often at times channeling his inner Morrissey and bringing a sound very reminiscent of early 80’s brit pop. They channeled through songs off the album Nocturne and played a rather inspiring set. With a complimentary fog machine and minimal light show set-up the venues dark and cozy environment complimented the performance to exact perfection.
